How to read a medical bill and spot errors

Medical bills are confusing, and mistakes happen. A few simple checks can help you understand what you owe and what to question.

1. Ask for an itemized bill

A summary bill only shows totals. An itemized bill lists every charge, with dates and codes, which makes mistakes much easier to see.

2. Compare it with your EOB

Your insurer sends an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) showing what they paid and what you owe. The amount you owe on the bill should match the EOB.

3. Look for common errors

Watch for duplicate charges, services you didn't receive, the wrong date, extra days in the hospital, or a charge billed as out of network when it shouldn't be.

4. Call or write to the billing office

Ask politely about each charge you're unsure of. Ask them to hold the bill while they check, so it isn't sent to collections.

5. Keep records

Write down the date, the person you spoke with, and any reference number for every call or message.
